The first examines the emergence of CSCW in the mid-1980s, finding that its timing and composition reflect changes within one context of systems development, product development. Many of the issues -- and some of the participants -- have a history in internal systems development; some confusion of identity in the field may be traced to the merging of these development paradigms. The second paper examines eight challenges in designing and evaluating groupware or CSCW applications, challenges that are new for product or application developers. One that is particularly problematic, due to the way software products are marketed, is the need to address a range of organizational factors on a site-by-site basis to obtain acceptance of systems developed to support groups.}, }

In SharedARK, users at separate workstations interact in real time with the same world of simulated physical objects. In the experiments, two users are in separate rooms with a workstation each, and communicate through a high fidelity, hands-free audio and a camera-monitor device called a "video tunnel" which enables eye contact. For comparison, we have removed the video tunnel for some subjects, and have placed other subject pairs in the same room, giving them only a workstation each. Within SharedARK, subjects are given a "microworld" within which to solve a problem in everyday physics. Subjects are videotaped and monitored from a remote room. The protocols have been submitted to a preliminary analysis, in which we categorise activities as they relate to use of the interface, task performance and social interaction. We also catalogue eye glances and eye contact in terms of their relation to these activities. Our primary purpose has been to assess the learnability and usability of this technology, and to identify factors that are important in facilitating collaborative problem solving by directly comparing remote, electronically mediated communication with physical co-presence. We find the system is easily learned and fairly easily used. Subjects normally find the task engaging, and usually work together through largely unarticulated task division to obtain at least a partial understanding of the solution space. Our observations have led us to the hypothesis that this technology can bring subjects in some ways closer together than if they were to engage in a similar task in the real world. We present evidence suggesting that this artificially enhanced proximity may play a positive role in supporting non-interface specific discourse and task division negotiation.}, }

Nor do teamwork values alone ensure team performance. So what is a team? How can managers know when the team option makes sense, and what can they do to ensure team success? In this groundbreaking March 1993 article, authors Jon Katzenbach and Douglas Smith answer these questions and outline the discipline that defines a real team. The essence of a team is shared commitment. Without it, groups perform as individuals; with it, they become a powerful unit of collective performance. The best teams invest a tremendous amount of time shaping a purpose that they can own. They also translate their purpose into specific performance goals. And members of successful teams pitch in and become accountable with and to their teammates. The fundamental distinction between teams and other forms of working groups turns on performance. A working group relies on the individual contributions of its members for collective performance. But a team strives for something greater than its members could achieve individually: An effective team is always worth more than the sum of its parts. The authors identify three kinds of teams: those that recommend things--task forces or project groups; those that make or do things--manufacturing, operations, or marketing groups; and those that run things--groups that oversee some significant functional activity. For managers, the key is knowing where in the organization these teams should be encouraged. Managers who can foster team development in the right place at the right time prime their organizations for top performance. }, }

Zur Darstellung des Stoffes werden zun{\"a}chst wesentliche {\"A}nderungen in den Unternehmensumwelten dargestellt, welche zu teambasierten Organisationsformen f{\"u}hren. Danach wird untersucht, welche Formen des Computereinsatzes die neuen Strukturen unterst{\"u}tzen. Die Besonderheit dieses Buches liegt einerseits in der umfassenden Darstellung der neuen Technologie des Workgroup Computing und andererseits in der integrierten Sichtweise technologischer und humanzentrierter Managementaspekte. Als wesentliches wissenschaftliches Ergebnis ist eine umfassende empirische Erhebung zum Meetingmanagement von F{\"u}hrungskr{\"a}ften sowie die Entwicklung des Grazer Integrierten Electronic Meeting Managements - ein System zur Unterst{\"u}tzung von Meetings - anzuf{\"u}hren. Ziel des Buches ist die Darstellung des Workgroup Computing auf Theoriebasis und anhand konkreter Anwendungsf{\"a}lle. Der besondere Nutzen liegt in einer umfassenden Darstellung aus der Sicht der Informatik und der Betriebswirtschaft, was als eine konkrete Leitlinie f{\"u}r die betriebliche Nutzung von Workgroup Computing dient. Abschlie{\ss}end sei darauf hingewiesen, da{\ss} es sich bei dieser Arbeit um die erste deutschsprachige Monographie zur informationstechnologischen Unterst{\"u}tzung kooperativer Prozesse handelt. Negotiation management, one such framework, has at its heart the application of computer models and related technology to a collaborative effort at dispute resolution. In this paradigm, negotiation is treated as a communicative and knowledge-intensive group problem-solving process. Easily accessible techniques are being developed for modeling both the process and substance of negotiation. In addition, tools are being designed for negotiators to use in risk and decision analysis, optimization, and precedent analysis. This paper outlines a synthesis of these elements in an integrated computer environment for negotiation management. }, }

In SharedARK, users at separate workstations interact in real time with the same world of simulated physical objects. In the experiments, two users are in separate rooms with a workstation each, and communicate through a high fidelity, hands-free audio and a camera-monitor device called a "video tunnel" which enables eye contact. For comparison, we have removed the video tunnel for some subjects, and have placed other subject pairs in the same room, giving them only a workstation each. Within SharedARK, subjects are given a "microworld" within which to solve a problem in everyday physics. Subjects are videotaped and monitored from a remote room. The protocols have been submitted to a preliminary analysis, in which we categorise activities as they relate to use of the interface, task performance and social interaction. We also catalogue eye glances and eye contact in terms of their relation to these activities. Our primary purpose has been to assess the learnability and usability of this technology, and to identify factors that are important in facilitating collaborative problem solving by directly comparing remote, electronically mediated communication with physical co-presence. We find the system is easily learned and fairly easily used. Subjects normally find the task engaging, and usually work together through largely unarticulated task division to obtain at least a partial understanding of the solution space. Our observations have led us to the hypothesis that this technology can bring subjects in some ways closer together than if they were to engage in a similar task in the real world. We present evidence suggesting that this artificially enhanced proximity may play a positive role in supporting non-interface specific discourse and task division negotiation.}, }
